Each day, the United States and Canada produce about 42 billion gallons of clean drinking water for consumption.
But how does that water get from the plant to customers?
Water towers come in all shapes and sizes. One thing you'll notice about them is that they're tall. This helps save energy by using gravity to move the water through the pipes to the customers.
To get the water from the treatment plant into the tank, the water utility uses pumps to make the water rise.
Large pipes called "mains" move the water from the tanks to the customers. Computers control the flow of the water through the mains and "valves" act like giant faucets that turn the flow of water off or on.
